Frequently Asked Questions

What must a UK invoice include?
A UK invoice must include: a unique invoice number, your business name and address, the client's name and address, the invoice date, a description of goods or services, the amount charged, and the VAT amount if you are VAT-registered.
Do sole traders need to charge VAT?
Only if your taxable turnover exceeds the VAT registration threshold (£90,000 in 2024/25). Below this, VAT registration is optional. If you're not VAT-registered, do not add VAT to your invoices.
How long do you have to send an invoice in the UK?
HMRC requires VAT invoices to be issued within 30 days of the date of supply. For non-VAT invoices there is no legal deadline, but prompt invoicing improves cash flow and reduces disputes.
What is a UTR number?
A UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) is a 10-digit number issued by HMRC to self-employed individuals and sole traders for tax purposes. It appears on your Self Assessment registration confirmation and tax returns.
