Frequently Asked Questions

What is VAT?
VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax placed on goods and services at each stage of production or distribution. It is ultimately paid by the end consumer. Rates vary by country — common rates include 5%, 10%, 20%, and 25%.
How does reverse VAT (removing VAT) work?
To remove VAT from a gross price, divide the gross amount by (1 + VAT rate / 100). For example, to strip 20% VAT from $120: $120 / 1.20 = $100 net. The VAT amount is $120 − $100 = $20.
What VAT rates are commonly used?
Common rates include 5% (UK reduced rate, UAE), 10% (Australia GST), 15% (New Zealand GST, South Africa), 20% (UK standard, France), 21% (Netherlands, Spain), and 25% (Sweden, Denmark). Use the Custom option for any other rate.
What's the difference between net and gross price?
The net price is the price before VAT (ex-VAT). The gross price is the total the customer pays, including VAT. Gross = Net + VAT amount.
Is this VAT calculator free?
Yes — completely free, no account or sign-up required. Results update in real time as you type.
