Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between profit margin and markup?
Profit margin is a percentage of the selling price: (Profit / Selling Price) × 100. Markup is a percentage of the cost: (Profit / Cost) × 100. A 25% markup does not equal a 25% margin — they measure the same profit from different bases.
What is a good profit margin?
It varies by industry. Retail typically runs 20–50%, SaaS can exceed 70%, while restaurants often operate at 3–9%. A net profit margin above 10% is generally considered healthy for most businesses.
How do I price a product to hit a target margin?
Use the "By Margin" tab. Enter your cost price and target margin %. The formula is: Selling Price = Cost / (1 − Margin / 100). The calculator handles this automatically.
How is gross profit calculated?
Gross Profit = Selling Price − Cost Price. It represents profit before operating expenses, taxes, and other overheads.
Can I calculate total profit across multiple units?
Yes. In the "By Price" tab, fill in the optional "Units Sold" field. The calculator shows total revenue, total cost, and total profit for that quantity.
