Frequently Asked Questions

What must I include on a Canadian invoice?
A Canadian invoice must include: your business name and address, the client's name and address, the invoice date, a description of the goods or services supplied, and the total amount charged. If you are registered for GST/HST, you must also include your GST/HST registration number and clearly show the amount of tax charged.
When do I need to charge GST/HST in Canada?
You must register for and charge GST/HST once your taxable revenues exceed CAD $30,000 in any single calendar quarter or in four consecutive quarters. The rate depends on your province: 5% GST in Alberta, BC, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan; 13% HST in Ontario; 15% HST in New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and PEI. Quebec charges 5% GST + 9.975% QST separately.
What is a Business Number (BN) in Canada?
A Business Number is a unique 9-digit identifier issued by the CRA to businesses. When you register for GST/HST, you receive a program account number in the format 123456789 RT 0001. This full number must appear on all invoices you issue to GST/HST-registered customers. Registering for a BN is free through the CRA Business Registration Online service.
What is the difference between GST, HST, and QST in Canada?
GST (5%) is the federal goods and services tax charged in all provinces. In some provinces, it is combined with provincial sales tax to create HST: Ontario charges 13% HST, while New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and PEI charge 15% HST. Quebec charges GST (5%) and QST (9.975%) separately. BC, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan charge GST (5%) plus their own PST separately.
Do I need to charge tax if I am a small supplier in Canada?
If your total taxable revenues are below CAD $30,000 over any four consecutive calendar quarters, you are a small supplier and do not need to register for or charge GST/HST. You also cannot claim input tax credits on your business purchases until you register. Once you exceed the threshold, you must register within 29 days.
