Frequently Asked Questions

What is required on an Australian tax invoice?
An Australian tax invoice must include: the words 'Tax Invoice' at the top, your business name and ABN, the invoice date, a description of the goods or services supplied, the GST amount (or a statement that the total includes GST), and the total price. For invoices over AUD $1,000, you must also include the buyer's name and address or ABN.
Do I need to charge GST in Australia?
You must register for GST if your annual turnover is AUD $75,000 or more ($150,000 for non-profit organisations). Once registered, you must charge 10% GST on most goods and services and issue tax invoices to your GST-registered customers. If you are under the threshold, GST registration is optional but can be beneficial.
What is an ABN and do I need it on my invoice?
An ABN (Australian Business Number) is an 11-digit number issued by the ATO that identifies your business. If you are registered for GST, your ABN must appear on all tax invoices. Even if not GST-registered, including your ABN prevents customers from withholding 47% of your payment under PAYG rules.
What is the difference between a tax invoice and a regular invoice in Australia?
A tax invoice is issued by a GST-registered business for a taxable supply and must show your ABN, the GST amount, and the words "Tax Invoice". A regular invoice is issued when the supply is GST-free, when the amount is under $82.50, or when the seller is not GST-registered.
Can I issue invoices without an ABN?
You can invoice without an ABN, but your customer may be required to withhold 47% of the payment (the top marginal tax rate) for PAYG withholding purposes, unless an exemption applies. Applying for an ABN is free through the Australian Business Register (abr.business.gov.au) and takes about 10 minutes.
